How hbus.fr builds its bus timetables

hbus.fr is not an official transit operator website: it is an aggregator that collects data published openly by operators and transport authorities. Understanding where these timetables come from also explains why they are sometimes incomplete.

Where the data comes from

Timetables come from the GTFS datasets that French mobility authorities and operators publish on the national open transport data platform (transport.data.gouv.fr). Each network publishes its planned service there: routes, stops, trips and service calendars.

We fetch those datasets automatically every night and rebuild the service at each stop from the most recent version. When an operator additionally publishes a real-time feed (in GTFS-RT or SIRI format) we match it against the planned service to show the departures actually expected.

Scheduled or real-time: how to read a departure

A departure shown without any specific label is scheduled: it is the time planned in the network's service calendar. A departure flagged as real-time has been confirmed by the operator's feed, including any delay or early running recorded for that trip. Real-time data is refreshed roughly every five minutes.

A stop may show scheduled times only for three reasons: the network publishes no real-time feed at all, the trip is not being tracked yet because the vehicle has not departed, or the operating window for the day has ended. This is not a fault on our side it is the limit of what the source makes available.

Disruptions, engineering works and diversions

Traffic information messages come from the service alerts published by the same networks, collected every ten minutes. An alert is attached to a route, not to a stop: when it appears on a stop page, it is because at least one route serving that stop is affected.

The exact scope of a disruption (diverted section, stop temporarily not served, service suspended) depends on how much detail the operator includes in the message. We neither invent it nor fill in the gaps.

What hbus.fr is not

hbus.fr is an independent service, free to use and requiring no account. We are not affiliated with any transport network, we sell no tickets, and we cannot fix data at its source: if a departure time is wrong in the original dataset, it is wrong here too.

Before a journey where a delay would matter, the information published by the operator prevails. Treat hbus.fr as a fast way to check and compare, not as a contractual source.
